Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and a singer. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has garnered an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita, a instructor at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of 10. Latifah was raised within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8 when her mother gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah that means tender and gentle in Arabic. Always tall, her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah became part of in the Flavor Unit in its original version, made up of a team of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The song got the attention to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
